Why Is Compressed Air Vital For Mining Processes?

Key applications of compressed air in mining operations

Within modern mining processes, air compressors play a key role in:

  • Improving mine and worker safety
  • Facilitating exploration drilling
  • Material handling
  • Providing breathable air and ventilation systems
  • Supplying air to refuge bays
  • Clearing harmful gases
  • Providing instrument air to power pneumatic tools and other mining equipment for blasting, rock bolting and pneumatic drills
  • Maximising the efficiency of resource extraction processes, whether this may be copper, lead, gold, iron ore, coal, or other materials and metals

These mining activities are often carried out in the harshest conditions, with overground and underground mining both requiring a solid, reliable compressed air network. CompAir’s range of expert compressed air technologies has been designed to help mining companies operate in challenging environments, whilst also keeping up with the ever-changing demands of the mining industry.

Specialised CompAir Modifications:

250kW, 1000V Oil-Lubricated Screw Compressor:

CompAir’s locally modified L250 oil-lubricated mining air compressors have been adapted specifically for underground mining applications.

  • High Ambient Motor Option: Designed to suit demanding mining environments, these compressed air solutions have a 50°C (55°C option available) rated motor and a climate control unit within the electrical canopy.
  • Dirty Environment Filtration: Our two available high-dust options are our dirty environment packs and high-dust intake filtration solutions; both are designed to combat the harsh mining dust and particles.
  • Mine Spec Conversion Oil-Lubricated Screw Compressor: This is another locally modified oil-lubricated L-Series air compressor, available in 30–250kW, to suit mining operations.

Air Treatment:

Clean, dry air for reliable and efficient mining operations

Ensuring you utilise clean, dry, high-quality compressed air for your mining processes is essential, especially if you only rely on an oil-lubricated machine. CompAir compressed air treatment delivers clean, high-quality compressed air in accordance with ISO 8573-1:2010 and ISO 12500-1, produced in a low-emission, energy-efficient, environmentally conscious manner. This is ensured by a 3-stage, effective downstream system that relies on CompAir’s expert, high-performance dryers, filtration systems, and condensate management and treatment solutions.
